Doug + Danie Hewlett

Doug and Danie Hewlett are the driving force behind the successful training, breeding, and showing operation at Hewlett Training. Over the last several years they have been quietly building up a winning operation, as evidenced by their recent championships at major national shows.

Doug Hewlett grew up in a ranching family in Iowa. Graduating from High School in Grand River, Iowa in 1984, he then headed to college at Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colorado. From 1985-1987, Doug was listed on the Dean's Honor Roll, and he graduated with a degree in Horse Training in 1987.

After college, Doug went straight to work in the show horse industry, working as Head Trainer for Precious Blood Quarter Horses at Triple T Ranch from 1986 to 1991. In 1991, he branched out on his own and started Hewlett Training.

Danie Hewlett grew up on the Colorado Western Slope, and was the owner and trainer at her boarding, training and hay operation. In 1998, she moved to the Front range and began working as a trainer for Doug Hewlett. In 2003, Doug and Danie got married and joined forces as owners and operators of Hewlett Training.

Together, Doug and Danie make a successful team. They both focus on starting and finishing top notch futurity and derby horses, while also offering non pro instruction.

Doug Hewlett has had a lot of success in the show pen recently. In 2003, Doug won the NRHA Limited Open Derby Championship on Megastar Kid, and was an Intermediate Open Finalist as well. In 2001, Doug and Megastar Kid captured the NRBC Limited Open Classic Championship. In 2006, he won the Open Futurity at the Sandhills Slide on Dunnits Surprise.

On the regional level, Doug has had a lot of success as well. In 2003, he rode Roosters Rafael to the Denver Summer Slide Intermediate Open Futurity Championship, and was the Open and Intermediate Open Champion at the Eastern Slope Slide.Danie Hewlett is also an accomplished show hand. She originally started out riding Hunters, but now has several NRHA wins to her credit. In 1998 Danie was the WSRHA Open and Novice Horse Open Champion. In 2006, Danie has won numerous NRHA open class wins and was the 2006 IBHA Reining World Champion. Danie has also been a carded NRHA Judge since 1994 to the present.

On a local level, Danie Hewlett is very involved in the local 4-H and saddle clubs. She also has served as a board member and Vice President of local reining affiliates.

Currently, Doug and Danie run a successful program out of their facility in Elbert, Colorado. They are located about 1 hour south of the Denver Airport, and about 35 minutes north of Colorado Springs. Their full service facility boasts a show barn filled with 12x12 stalls, an 80' x 125' indoor arena, a 300' x 180' outdoor arena, and a round pen.
